One of the longest-serving trustees in the city’s history says he's looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren and serving the community in other ways.

Bill Mokomela announced Friday that retiring after 33 years as a trustee for the Lakehead Public School Board.

Mokomela has decided not to run in this year's municipal election, and said it's been a privilege working on behalf of the public school community. He said his biggest highlights have been making changes that help kids learn and succeed.

He added that his biggest challenge was voting to close schools due to declining enrolment. Mokomela said he never imagined he'd spend so many years as a trustee when he first started out.
Mokomela will remain on the Lakehead Board until the end of the current term on Nov. 30.
