WILLMAR, Minn. – Eight straight losses is enough for the Thunder Bay Border Cats.

Despite holding the lead twice in Friday night’s rematch with the host Willmar Stingers, the Northwoods League club couldn’t get the job done, falling 10-7 to wrap up their road trip as they prepare to return home on Saturday to take on the Rochester Honkers at the friendly confines of Port Arthur Stadium.

Jayson Newman singled home what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning off reliever Justin King, breaking open a 7-7 tie.

Tyler Reichenborn stole home later in the inning to extend the lead to 9-7 and they’d add one more in the eighth on a Jaxon Hallmark RBI triple.

Thunder Bay jumped in front 1-0 in the first on Mark Vierling’s fielder’s choice, and then, after Cats starter Drew Gooch allowed three in the first on three hits and a pair of walks, they’d add three of their own in the third to go in front 4-3, a rally started with an RBI double off the bat of Billy Book.

Jack Rasmussen subbed for Calvin Wood with two outs in the third, but didn’t have his best stuff an d took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hit in an inning-and-two-thirds.

Garret Saunders was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Evan Russell was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Brandon Trammell also drove in a pair for Thunder Bay.

Braxton Johns, who took over in the fifth, the third Stingers pitcher of the night, was credited with the win.

The defeat dropped Thunder Bay to 4-14 on the season and into sole possession of the North Division cellar. Willmar improved to 11-7, two games behind first-place Duluth.
