THUNDER BAY - A low-fare airline is expanding service across Canada and will include Thunder Bay on its new list of destinations later this year.

Flair Airlines, an independent ultra low-cost carrier based in Alberta, announced on Wednesday that it is adding 18 new Canadian destinations this spring and summer.

Four new destinations will be added in May, including Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo, Halifax, and Saint John, with service between Thunder Bay and Toronto Pearson Airport beginning on June 3. There will be three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and one-way fares under $50.

Other new destinations to be added in the summer include Charlottetown, Victoria, and Abbotsford.

“Canadians have been paying too much for too long, and we are changing that with our ULCC model that makes getting around Canada affordable,” said Stephen Jones, president and CEO of Flair Airlines.

“Providing affordable air travel within Canada is the first step in restarting travel and tourism, and Flair is uniquely positioned with the efficiencies of our low-cost model. When non-essential travel returns, Flair will be there to reconnect families and provide the low fares that have long been denied to Canadians.”

The company anticipates domestic travel will begin to increase in the spring and summer as restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic begin to loosen.

“We strongly support the need for restricting non-essential travel as Canada works to bend the curve. Flair was one of the first airlines to reduce our network and focus exclusively on essential domestic travel,” Jones said.

“We are confident, as travel returns, there is a strong market for low fare travel choices from a socially responsible Canadian airline. Flair’s ULCC business model doesn’t have the overhead and costs associated with legacy organizations and networks, and this allows our efficiencies to be passed along in our pricing.”

According to Flair Airlines, one-way fares are available for as low as $39 on several of the new routes.

A one-way fare from Thunder Bay to Toronto on June 3 is listed at $49 on the Flair Airline website.

Flair Airlines is expanding its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, allowing for the addition of new destinations.
