The Lowery’s Sports Dome is closed for the summer.

Facility spokesman Jake Satten on Monday said slower summer traffic flows made it the ideal time to shut the doors and make renovations totalling about $100,000.

Satten said they plan to replace the golf tee mats and are considering putting in a synthetic ice surface where the basketball courts presently stand.

“The dome in its current state has been open for about six years,” Satten said. “We’ve certainly gotten a lot of usage out of it, in terms of community members, soccer clubs and golfers. But now we want to improve those uses.”

Satten said they plan to re-strategize with user groups, including the Thunder Bay Chill and Lakehead Express.

“We’re still determining how far we want to go,” he said.

Among the possibilities are more golf simulators, a popular addition by Dustin Wilson last winter.

Satten said he expects the Sports Dome will reopen in September and won’t affect indoor programming scheduled for the facility in the fall
