THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood warning for the Lakehead Region.
Communities affected include Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing and the townships of O’Connor and Gillies.
The LRCA advises that over 90 millimetres of precipitation has been recorded on the Whitefish River gauge in Nolalu in the last 24 hours.
Whitefish River and tributaries in the area are continuing to rise and will likely not peak until later tonight or tomorrow, Additional precipitation is forecasted overnight with the potential for thunderstorms.
According to a Lakehead Public School release, due to rising water levels on the Whitefish River and road closures/washouts, Whitefish Valley Public School is dismissing students early on Tuesday.
While buses have been sent to pick students up, parents/guardians are asked to pick up their children as soon as possible if they are able to.
The Village of Hymers is experiencing flooding and other tributaries in the area are also reacting to the rainfall.
