LRCA says so far mother nature is providing the ‘perfect’ melt

So far it appears mother nature is allowing the snow to melt at the perfect pace -- not too fast and not too slow. The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has been conducting snow surveys twice a month to get a sense of any flood concerns.

So far it appears mother nature is allowing the snow to melt at the perfect pace -- not too fast and not too slow.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has been conducting snow surveys twice a month to get a sense of any flood concerns. Chair Bill Barley said so far, so good.

The warm days and cool nights have been just what the area needs for the snow to melt without flooding concerns.

“The melt is perfect,” he said. “As long as we don’t have a heavy melt and a heavy rainfall together we should be OK for the foreseeable future.”

Rivers and waterways are also being watched closely by the LRCA. Bartley said no ice packs have been seen so far.

“We’re just keeping an eye on the situation,” he said.

As for the danger of too little water, Bartley said that’s not a concern.

“The snowpack in the city is nothing compared to what’s out in the countryside,” he said.

Any change will be updated by the LRCA’s warning and alert system. In the meantime, Bartley said people should start to be mindful about walking on waterways.

“It looks nice but don’t go there. You don’t know how thin the ice is getting in certain spots.”
