THUNDER BAY – Area children were invited to get to learn a bit about some local species this weekend.

Children between the ages of five and eight were invited out to Wishart Forest Conservation Area on Saturday to participate in a variety of activities to help them learn about a few local bird species.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has held similar events for older children.

Rachael Zacharias-Bezanson, education coordinator at the LRCA, said some parents hoped to get their younger children involved.

“For the first time, I ran Thunder Bay's first annual Christmas bird count at the end of January and I aimed it at kids age eight and over,” she said. “And, I had a few people say, hey, what about younger kids? So, I designed an event that is shorter with more games and we are going to be working with younger kids today.”

Zacharias-Bezanson said children’s seemingly natural fascination makes birds a wonderful ambassador to the wildlife in Thunder Bay.

“They are accessible, they’re colourful, they can come and visit our houses,” she said. “So, I think that kids learning early what the names of some of the birds are really brings a sense of the environment and their wild neighbours into their lives.”
