Lakehead University students now have more centralized access to student services on the Thunder Bay campus.

Monday the university launched its new Student Success Centre, which has brought many services normally spread throughout the campus, into one office area.

“Like any large entity out there in society we’ve got all our services spread across campus. So if a student wants financial aid, they go to one office. If they need registration help, they go to a different office,” said provost and vice-president of academics Rod Hanley.

“It means that students have to hike usually between buildings, talk to different people, maybe get an answer to one question and have to wait to talk to the right person somewhere else,” he added.

To improve efficiency, the majority of student services are now in one central office located in the underground tunnel area of the campus near the Lakehead University Student Union office.

The Student Success Centre includes the services of the former Office of Academic Advising, Career and Co-operative Education, Tutoring Services and Orientation and Commuter Services.

“(Students) essentially can show up just to this office and get most of their problems dealt with and questions answered,” said Hanley.

The SSC also has student advisors on hand ready to aid students in whatever their needs are.
Ryan Green is a student advisor and said students can stick with the same advisor throughout their entire time at Lakehead.

He added the centre is meant to be a welcoming, positive place for students to come for help.
