Maclean’s magazine has released its 2010 ranking of Canadian Universities, and has placed Lakehead University third overall among undergraduate universities in Ontario.

The ranking is an improvement for the Thunder Bay post-secondary school, which typically receives scores that put the school in the mid-to-lower end of the national magazine’s annual list. The 2010 rankings are done in three categories – medical and doctoral, comprehensive and primarily undergraduate.

LU is listed as third overall among the eight undergraduate Ontario universities, and has moved up two places against all Canadian undergraduate universities.

"We are delighted with these results that show the quality of a Lakehead education," Brian Stevenson, the school’s president, is quoted as sayign in a news release issued Tuesday.

"Also of particular interest, an Ontario-wide survey conducted by the Council for Ontario Universities indicates that 97 per cent of Lakehead graduates are employed two years after leaving the University."

The university scored its highest marks in the following categories:
  • First in total research dollars
  • First in library holdings per student
  • Second in operating budget
  • Second in student awards
  • Second in scholarships and bursaries.
