THUNDER BAY – Lakehead’s Dylan Morrison has been named the OUA West defensive player of the year.
Morrison, an NCAA Division 1 transfer with three seasons of college experience south of the border, was one of three LU players honoured on Thursday, as the OUA announced its major award winners.
Fellow transfer Michael Okafor, a Toronto native, was named to the OUA West second all-star team, while guard Chris Sagl was named to the conference all-rookie team.
Morrison led the OUA with 35 blocks and had 11 steals, while averaging 6.4 rebounds a night, placing him inside the top 20.
Okafor, whose up-tempo game and ability to play well beyond his size helped Lakehead to an impressive 11-5 record in 2021-22, finished eighth in the OUA in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per night and was third in overall rebounds and fifth in boards per game, with 8.6.
He led the OUA in steals and was 10th in blocks, and was sixth in points per 40 minutes.
Sagl impressed off the bench as a freshman, averaging 6.8 points per game while shooting 32.6 per cent from distance.
The Wolves advanced to the second round of the OUA playoffs, but bowed out against McMaster on the road last weekend.
On Wendesday, Lakehead hockey's Joe Mack was named an OUA Far West second-team all-star, as well as being named to the conference all-rookie team.
