LUSU celebrates 40 years

Lakehead University Student Union is celebrating 40 years.

THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead University Student Union is celebrating its 40 years of work on behalf of its students to advance social justice initiatives.

“So the idea was to gather our partners, our members, to kick off the celebrations for the year, as you know, we’re celebrating 40 years of LUSU and student representation at Lakehead University this year and the idea was to come together and have it be our representation of what the last 40 years have been like,” said Lahama Naeem, President and CEO of the Lakehead University Student Union,

“It’s been a collaborative effort from partners like Lakehead University, the Alumni Association, the Board of Governors, and many other community organizations, and the thought again today was to have that mingle with students and to have those community partners come together in celebrating the stay with us.”

Lakehead University president Moira McPherson was thrilled to be able to celebrate the past 40 years with the current leaders of LUSU.

“I think over the years the relationship has been fantastic, there have been so many initiatives that LUSU executive, administration, staff, faculty, have all come together to work with students and to be able to develop the new initiatives, which have allowed the university to evolve and grow,” McPherson Said.

The Lakehead University Student Union were extremely proud of the work that’s been put in over the last 40 years, but they’re especially proud of the services and supports they offer students.

“LUSU offers a number of services and supports to students throughout the year, whether that’s the highly discounted U-pass or the extended health plan service we offer, the two businesses on campus that are owned and operated by LUSU, that’s the study coffee house and the outpost pub,” said Naeem,

“We also hire a number of students and provide a wholesome experience for students to grow academically, professionally, enhance their social lives as well while they’re at university.”

During the celebration, the Lakehead University Student Union also unveiled its new logo which has a “1980’s vibe” to honour the year the Union was founded.

“LUSU was established in 1981, and we had a little brainstorming session with our staff and everyone thought we should celebrate the 80s, bring something back,” said Naeem,

“I really don’t think we’ve seen anything like this in pop culture or mainstream media recently with the whole sunset and the retro vibes and we thought it would be fun to add a little spice to the year and bring back something from when LUSU first formed as a tribute to those first couple of executive teams and the first few members of LUSU.”
