THUNDER BAY - A fire that broke out early Sunday morning at a Machar Avenue home has left one man dead, with a female occupant in uncertain condition.

Fire services say the fire seemingly started in a couch on the main floor. Crews responded just after 3 a.m., encountering heavy smoke. The two occupants were rushed to hospital, with the woman unconscious and the man, reportedly in his 40s, lacking vital signs. A dog in the building also succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Police are holding the scene for an Ontario Fire Marshal investigation into the cause of the fire.
