Making region electric-car friendly no easy task

THUNDER BAY -- Officials at a pair of local hotels say it won't be easy to make the Northwest user-friendly for electric vehicles.

THUNDER BAY -- Officials at a pair of local hotels say it won't be easy to make the Northwest user-friendly for electric vehicles.

Yesterday the province announced a $20 million incentive program to create more charging stations and increase the number of electric cars on Ontario roads.

Over the past three years, Sun Country Highway has partnered with several hotels in our region to install recharging units.

The stations are peppered across the Northwest, but their usage is not very heavy.

Two of those hotels are the Nor'wester Hotel and the Valhalla Inn.

They offer free use of the chargers, with the rental of a room.

Hotel officials say the new incentives are a good idea.  However, given where Thunder Bay is located, they say electric cars may not take the region by storm.

The province is seeking public and private sector partners to create a network of fast-charging stations along highways and at workplaces, apartments and public buildings.
