Johnathon Yellowhead, who was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the 2018 death of 17-year-old Braiden Jacob, is facing additional charges including assaulting a peace officer and assault causing bodily harm from an incident at the Thunder Bay District Jail while in custody.

THUNDER BAY - A man accused in the murder of 17-year-old Braiden Jacob is facing additional charges from an incident that took place while in custody.

Johnathon Yellowhead, 22, of Fort Hope was charged in March with obstructing a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, failure to comply with a probation order, and assault causing bodily harm from an incident that took place at the Thunder Bay District Jail on March 17, 2019. Three other individuals were also charged.

Yellowhead made a brief court appearance on Tuesday at the Thunder Bay Courthouse for a pre-trial conference.

Last December, Yellowhead was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of 17-year-old Braiden Jacob, as well as breaching a probation order.

Jacob was in Thunder Bay from his home community of Webequie First Nation to seek counselling services. He was reported missing on Dec. 6 and his body was found three days later on Dec. 9 in Chapples Park.

Jacob’s death was ruled a homicide by Thunder Bay Police and Yellowhead was arrested and charged on Dec. 14.

Defense attorney, Neil McCartney, requested a pre-trial conference take place next month where a date for a preliminary hearing is expected to be scheduled.

Yellowhead was remanded into custody.
