Man allegedly leapfrogs up North Shore stealing vehicles

NIPIGON -- A Winnipeg man who allegedly raced up the North Shore stealing vehicles over the weekend has been arrested. 

The ordeal began on Thursdsay when members of the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police and Anishnabek Police Service officers were called out to investigate a recovered stolen vehicle. They did not locate a suspect at the scene. 

On Friday, a pickup truck that was stolen in the Marathon area was found 100 kilometres away on Hydro Bay Road between Terrace Bay and Schreiber. Schreiber OPP officers attempted to apprehend the suspect but were not successful.

On Saturday morning, another pickup truck was stolen from a residence in Terrace Bay. A high speed chase with police ensued, which ended in the suspect driving the vehicle into a ditch in the Township of Corrigal, east of Nipigon. 

The Nipigon OPP, North West Region K-9 unit, and Emergency Response Teams were called in on the search. 

A civilian tip resulted in the police taking the man into custody in Nipigon on Sunday.

He has been charged with two counts of motor vehicle theft over $5,000 , two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft under $5,000, resisting arrest and breaching probation.
