Man arrested after alleged sexual assault

Police were called to an area of the city's east end on Thursday morning after a woman reported being sexually assaulted

THUNDER BAY — City police have arrested a 24-year-old from Nigeria after an alleged sexual assault on Thursday morning.

Thunder Bay police said officers were called to an area of Pacific Avenue and Spring Street just after 6 a.m., where they found the victim who was taken to hospital.

Police said the victim had been socializing with friends the previous evening before going to a home in the 700 block of McKenzie Street, where she was allegedly assaulted by a man.

Investigators were able to identify a suspect, who was found at that home and was arrested.

The suspect — Somtochukwu Oriegbunam — has been charged with one count of sexual assault. He appeared in bail court on Friday and remains in custody wtih a future appearance date.

The charge has yet to be tested in court.
