THUNDER BAY — A police officer and a security guard were assaulted during an altercation at a hotel.

Thunder Bay police said officers were sent to a hotel in the 500 block of Arthur Street just after 2:30 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports of an assault.

Police said an unwanted person had been asked to leave the hotel. The man, who was being escorted off the property, became increasingly aggressive and attacked a security guard.

The security guard was taken to hospital by paramedics for evaluation and treatment of injuries.

The male suspect assaulted one of the arresting officers, but was taken into custody and brought to the police station. Police said the officer was not seriously injured.

A 21-year-old from Pikangikum First Nation is charged with assault, assaulting a peace officer, and uttering threats of causing death or bodily harm.

The accused appeared in bail court later Thursday and remains in custody with a future court date scheduled.
