NIPIGON – A Thunder Bay man is in hot water after allegedly stealing a tow truck with his own impounded vehicle attached.

In a release issued on Monday, Nipigon OPP say on Saturday at about 7:12 p.m. they responded to report of a stolen tow truck, towing a vehicle impounded the day before, but when encountered near Gravel River, the driver refused to stop and police had to use a spike belt to halt the vehicle.

Vasudevan Dev, 21, was arrested and charged with a litany of offences, including operating a vehicle without insurances, two counts of driving while under suspension, theft of a motor vehicle, mischief over $5,000, dangerous operation of motor vehicle and flight while being pursued by a police officer.

Dev on Friday was stopped on Highway 11-17 near Shuniah, allegedly travelling at a high rate of speed. Police subsequently learned the driver had a suspended licence and the vehicle was not insured.

The vehicle was then seized and impounded for seven days.
