Man arrested after Northwestern Ontario car chase

Halton Hills, Ont. suspect allegedly stole a car in Ignace and was ultimately stopped by a spike belt after looping back toward the community.

IGNACE, Ont. – A alleged speeding car thief was taken down last Friday with a spike belt on Highway 599.

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued on Tuesday, said they were investigating the theft of a vehicle from a gas station in Ignace.

The suspect vehicle headed eastbound on Highway 17, then the driver turned down a side road about 40 kilometres from Ignace and made his way westward toward Highway 599, where the vehicle he was driving was halted by the spike belt.

He was then caught allegedly trying to steal another vehicle from a business in Ignace.

Gordon Rafuse, 35, of Halton Hills, Ont. is charged with several offences, including flight while pursued by a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000 of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Added to the list of charges was four counts of failing to comply with a recognizance order and driving while under suspension.

The suspect was held in custody and will appear on Wednesday for a bail hearing in Sioux Lookout court.
