Man arrested on bus, charged with child abduction

Police say they stopped a bus near Oliver Paipoonge and removed a 22-year-old man and 11-year old girl involved in an alleged abduction case.

OLIVER PAIPOONGE -- A 22-year-old Norfolk County, Ont. man is in custody after being arrested near Thunder Bay on Tuesday in connection with the abduction of an 11-year-old girl.

Ontario Provincial Police in a release said they received a tip that the suspect and the girl were traveling westward on a Greyhound bus and might be arriving at the Thunder Bay bus terminal.

Police located the bus on Highway 11/17 near Fraser Road in Oliver Paipoonge.

The suspect and girl were on board.

Brandon Labonte, 22, was arrested for abduction of a child under 14 years old as well as breach of probation. He was returned to Norfolk County to face the charges.

The girl was taken into the protective custody of the Thunder Bay Children’s Aid Society until arrangements can be made to reunite her with her family.

Norfolk County OPP is continuing the investigation.
