Man charged after allegedly threatening hospital staff with knife

The 31-year-old man surrendered the knife to hospital security before police arrived when he was then taken into custody

THUNDER BAY - A Thunder Bay man is facing several charges after allegedly pulling a knife on staff members at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

A Thunder Bay Police Service spokesperson confirmed the incident took place on July 24, just before 7 p.m. Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service received reports of a male with a knife threatening staff at the hospital.

The man was making verbal threats against the staff, as security, nurses, and doctors attempted to calm the man down.

The man agreed to surrender the knife to security and a doctor continued to calm the man.

When police arrived, a 31-year-old Thunder Bay man was arrested and is now facing charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of assault with a weapon, and uttering threats.

The man has been released on a promise to appear for a future court date.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre was contacted for comment on this incident, but has yet to respond.
