The man charged with impaired driving following a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian last Sunday will spend Christmas in jail.
Christian Emhir Hernandez, 25, of Thunder Bay was remanded into custody Friday morning with his consent until Jan. 12, when he is scheduled to appear for a show-cause hearing. The court date was set following Hernandez’s bail hearing appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers charged Hernandez with two counts of impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident following a fatal crash on the city’s north side that killed a 45-year-old man.
Richard Garson Carmichael was pronounced dead at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after he was struck by a vehicle, allegedly driven by Hernandez, in the 100 block of High Street North.
Hernandez’s girlfriend was following him at the time of the incident, said police spokesman Chris Adams.
“She called police and was present at the Shuniah Street residence with Hernandez when police arrived to investigate,” he said.
Hernandez was taken into custody about 20 minutes after police and paramedics arrived at the scene of the incident.
