THUNDER BAY - A man is in police custody and has been charged with arson for his alleged involvement with a suspicious fire that occurred at a local laundromat in April.

Thunder Bay Fire rescue attended to Barb’s Laundromat on April 19 to find smoke and fire visible in the interior front of the store located on North Cumberland Street.

Randall Prien, 60, has been formally charged with one count of intentionally or recklessly causing damage by fire in connection to the April 19 incident.

He appeared by video in Thunder Bay court from the Thunder Bay Police Service Balmoral Street station for his first appearance and to have his charge formally sworn in by a justice of the peace.

Nobody was hurt in the fire but police deemed the fire suspicious in nature at the time.

Prien will remain in custody for the time being and has a future court date on May 15 for bail planning purposes.
