Man charged with assaulting spouse

OPP responded in force after an incident in a Kenora motel.

KENORA, Ont - Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 31-year-old man in connection with a domestic-related incident in Kenora on Sunday.

OPP reported the details of their investigation on Tuesday.

They said officers responded about 9:30 a.m. Sunday to an incident at the Anchor Inn in which a woman had been assaulted with a weapon, suffering minor injuries.

She was eventually able to leave the room and was taken to hospital for treatment, but the suspect remained barricaded in the motel with a weapon. 

OPP dispatched the Northwest Region Emergency Response Team, a canine unit, a Crisis Negotiating Team and other personnel to the scene.

After about four hours, the incident ended peacefully with the suspect's arrest.

He faces seven charges including assault with a weapon-spousal, uttering threats to cause death, forcible confinement and assaulting an officer with a weapon.

The man was held in custody for a bail hearing. His name is being withheld by police to protect the identity of the victim.

OPP did not disclose what kind of weapon was involved in the incident.
