THUNDER BAY — A 46-year-old Thunder Bay man is charged with attempted murder after an incident at a north side apartment.

City police officers were called to the 300 block of St. Vincent Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports of an incident in progress involving a weapon, the Thunder Bay Police Service said in a Tuesday afternoon news release.

Police said officers entering the apartment found a male who had injuries that appeared to be the result of a serious and recent assault.

The victim was taken to hospital for further evaluation and treatment of injuries.

Police alleged the victim had been involved in an argument with a man that he knew. The confrontation became physical and the victim was attacked with an edged weapon, police added.

The accused was found nearby by officers who were containing the scene. He was arrested without further incident and brought to the police station.

Police said Stephen Byron Kelly is charged with attempted murder. He appeared in bail court on Tuesday and remains in custody with a future appearance date. The charge has yet to be tested in court.

A police presence remains in the area, and a crime scene has been established.

The police service's major crimes unit and forensic identification units are involved in the investigation.
