Man charged with impaired, dangerous driving after crashing into police vehicle

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at the corner of James and Arthur streets after a pickup truck went through a red light and collided with a police vehicle.

THUNDER BAY — A 28-year-old man faces dangerous and impaired driving after crashing into an unmarked police vehicle.

Thunder Bay police said the incident happened Wednesday afternoon at the corner of James and Arthur streets, involving a red pickup truck and the police vehicle.

Police said the truck went through a red light at the intersection. Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

Officers observed multiple signs of impairment from the driver of the truck, who was taken to hospital. The driver later failed a field sobriety test.

A search of the vehicle resulted in police seizing suspected crack cocaine and hydromorphone.

Police said the officer's injuries are believed to be minor.

The accused is charged with impaired driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and multiple counts of drug possession. He was released from custody on conditions with a future court date.
