GRAND MARAIS, MN — Police are investigating after a large wave knocked a man into Lake Superior at Lutsen, Minn. and pulled him into the water where he died.

The Cook County sheriff's office reports the incident happened Tuesday afternoon.

It said the 61-year-old man and a female companion had been sitting on the shore outside a cabin.

The woman told officers he stayed behind when she decided to return to the cabin, and she looked back to witness a big wave knock the man over.

She said he was then pulled into the lake and was unable to get back to shore.

Sheriff's deputies arrived to observe an unresponsive body drifting in the current about 100 feet from the beach.

Members of the county search and rescue unit launched a boat from Tofte but were unable to navigate the rough water and had to turn back.

The deceased was later recovered from the water by the US Border Patrol using a boat launched at Grand Marais.

His identity and the cause of his death are being withheld pending results of an autopsy.
