A man is dead after a fire ripped through a Hodder Avenue residence on Saturday evening.

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue Service responded to the call, which came in at about 8:40 p.m., knowing there were reports of someone still being inside the building.

Fire crews forced their way into the burning apartment and pulled the victim out and attempted resuscitation, but to no avail.
The man's identity is not known at this time.

Firefighters quickly doused the blaze, which prevented it spreading to other units. There was heavy damage to one apartment and smoke damage throughout the building, which at this hour is surrounded by yellow police tape and guarded by a police officer in a patrol cruiser.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but it is under investigation by Thunder Bay Fire's prevention division, Thunder Bay Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.
