THUNDER BAY — The Office of the Fire Marshal has confirmed that a man died in a mobile home fire in the city on Sunday.
Investigator Mike Rushton said an adult male, whose name has not been released, lost his life when an early-morning blaze destroyed a dwelling at 18 Taylor Drive, off Rosslyn Road.
Rushton said a female also sustained critical injuries, and was taken to hospital.
Investigators believe the fire started near the front of the mobile home in the living room area, but they were still combing the debris on Monday afternoon.
"It's not finished yet for sure, we're still in the middle of it," Rushton said.
Late Monday afternoon, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue provided additional details about the tragedy.
It said fire crews arrived at the residence to find flames coming from the front half of the structure. They attacked the flames while simultaneously searching for trapped victims.
After removing the two occupants, firefighters began resuscitation efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim was successfully resuscitated by paramedics. She remains in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Deputy fire chief Greg Hankkio said "While it is not known if properly installed, working smoke alarms were in place at the time of the fire, it is known that they save lives. A properly installed, working smoke alarm will provide you with the precious time to escape a fire," Hankkio said.
