IGNACE, Ont. -- An Ignace man has been fined for possessing an over-limit of walleye.

Lee Baldwin pleaded guilty and was fined $4,800 for possessing more walleye than allowed under the Ontario Fishery Regulations. Baldwin also received a four-year fishing licence suspension.

Court heard that on July 26, 2018, as part of an ongoing moose investigation, conservation officers executed a search warrant on Baldwin’s residence. During their search for moose meat, the officers found packages of frozen fish in a freezer. Much of the fish had been skinned and packaged in a manner in which it could not easily be counted. Upon seizing and thawing the fish, officers determined that Baldwin was in possession of 24 walleye over his legal possession limit.

Justice of the Peace Edith Baas heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Ignace, on September 11, 2018.

The public is reminded that catch and possession limits are in place to ensure the sustainability of Ontario’s fisheries.
