THUNDER BAY – An 18-year-old man sustained what are believed to be serious injuries in a single-vehicle collision at Marina Park on Sunday.

Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service were dispatched to reports of a single-vehicle collision near the roundabout on Pearl Street at the southern entrance to the park just after 10:15 p.m. Sunday, the TBPS said.

The vehicle appeared to have struck a rock, according to that report. A police investigation has not yet confirmed the exact circumstances of the incident.

Officers found a blue sedan that appeared to have sustained significant damage on the east side of the roadway leading to Pool 6 when they arrived at the scene.

Two people, believed to have been passengers, had exited the vehicle, police said. However, the driver remained inside with apparent injuries. Firefighters were needed to extricate the male from the vehicle.

Paramedics with Superior North EMS also responded to the scene.

The driver was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation and treatment.

In a release Monday, police said the exact extent of those injuries was unknown, but were believed to be serious.

The TBPS’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate.
