Police charged a 49-year-old with careless driving in connection to a fatal vehicle collision on Wednesday.

Thunder Bay Police Service said Darren Dolph appeared to be riding to work before a pickup truck collided with him on Red River Road at the entrance to the Heart of the Habour Parkade about 7:30 a.m. Paramedics took Dolph to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The pickup truck appeared to be turning into the parkade when it collided with the motorcycle. Police say the 49-year-old-man driving the truck received no injuries but was shaken up.

Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit stopped traffic westbound between Court Street North and Red River Road. Police restricted eastbound traffic to a single lane and expected the investigation to take several hours. Police allowed traffic through about noon.

Sgt. Glen Porter said the investigation is ongoing but police had a good idea what had happened.

"The investigating officer still wants to check on a few small things before we proceed to a possible charge," Porter said. "We’re just finishing up the small details."

Porter said it is a dangerous time because people are riding their motorcycles. He cautioned those riding to wear proper safety gear and for drivers to watch for bikes on the road.
