THUNDER BAY - A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection to the 2019 death of 58-year-old Claude Justin Kishiqueb has been sentenced to six years.
Nathaniel Wesley appeared in a Thunder Bay Courtroom on Monday where the sentence was imposed by Justice Danalyn MacKinnon.
Wesley was credited with pre-sentence custody of 32 months, enhanced to 48 months, leaving him with two years left to serve. Upon his release, he will be subject to three years probation.
The incident took place on March 21, 2019 when Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to a North Cumberland Street address after receiving reports of an injured man.
Police located two male victims. One victim, Kishiqueb, became unresponsive and was pronounced dead. The second victim was transported to the hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.
Wesley was arrested a short time later in the area and initially charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and breach of probation.
In March 2021, Wesley pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter as well as failing to comply with a probation order.
The sentence was part of a joint submission presented by Crown attorney Rob Kozak and defense counsel Michael Hargadon.
All other charges were marked withdrawn at the request of the Crown. In addition to the six-year sentence, Wesley is also required to submit a DNA sample and is subject to a weapons prohibition for 10 years.
