THUNDER BAY -- A male occupant of a Clarkson Street apartment unit was rescued and sent to hospital after a fire early Friday morning.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said they received a report of a possible structure fire at about 4:18 a.m. and arrived to find significant smoke on the third floor of the building.

Crews quickly located an apartment unit with heavy smoke conditions, gained entry and found a person inside. A second alarm was called and firefighters began evacuating additional residents from the building, while also looking for any additional occupants. A contents fire was rapidly extinguished and ventilation efforts were begun to clear smoke for both the apartment unit and hallway.

TBFR says the victim's condition is unknown at this time.

All other residents of the building were moved to hallways and lobby areas on lower floor levels to keep them out of the cold until they could be safely returned to their apartments.

No other injuries were reported and damage was moderate in the apartment unit.

The fire, which required six pumpers, and aerial ladder and a command unit, remains under investigation.
