The 20-year-old man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter earlier this year offered an apology to the victim's family at his sentencing hearing Monday.

Patrick Kanate was arrested following the stabbing death of his cousin, 25-year-old Keegan Williams.

Kanate looked at his aunt and said he's sorry for everything he's done to her and for "making her life miserable."

The two men became involved in an altercation outside their home on South High Street in September of 2010. The court heard how the two were heavily intoxicated and that it was the victim, Williams, who pulled out a knife.

Kanate ended up getting a hold of the knife and stabbed the victim in the arm, hitting a major artery and causing him to bleed to death.

On Monday, lawyers for the defense and the Crown offered a joint submission, recommending a sentence of six-to-10 years of jail time.

The judge is expected to make a decision on Dec. 5.
