Man with baseball bat faces assault charges after police respond to weapons call

THUNDER BAY — A 29-year-old Thunder Bay man faces multiple charges after an overnight incident that resulted in a woman being struck by a man swinging a baseball bat.

The Thunder Bay Police Service said officers received a reported weapons call on the 200 block area of Cumming Street just after 2 a.m. Thursday.

Police said they were notified that a man was swinging the bat in the stairwell of an apartment building and had struck a woman.

The suspect attempted to run from police, but was caught after a brief foot chase.

The accused is charged with assault, assault with a weapon, obstructing a peace officer, mischief under $5,000, and failure to comply with a probation order.

He appeared in bail court on Thursday and remains in custody with a future court date scheduled.
