NIPIGON, Ont. -- A 33-year-old man who fled from police was brought into custody after needing help from a passing motorist when his vehicle got stuck on a side road.
Provincial police in Nipigon attempted to pull over a vehicle on Highway 11/17 early Tuesday morning but the driver took off at a high speed when an officer approached the vehicle.
Police did not pursue the vehicle, instead using police radio to broadcast a description of the vehicle and the driver.
About four hours later, the vehicle got stuck on a side road off the highway in Wiggins Township. The driver asked for help from a passing motorist, who was aware police were searching for someone in the area, and brought him to nearby officers.
Police determined the driver had been drinking alcohol and the vehicle and plates were found to have been stolen from the Brampton, Ont. area.
The driver has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, failing to provide a breath sample, three counts of possession of property obtained by crime, breach of recognizance and a number of Highway Traffic Act offences.
The Mississauga man remains in custody with a bail hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
