THUNDER BAY — Several animals were rescued after a barn fire at a Mapleward Road farm, but more than 200 animals perished in the incident.

Fiefighters were called to the fire just after 7 p.m. on Thursday, where they found heavy smoke coming from a building on the property, leading them to call for additional support.

Four pumpers and a tanker were dispatched to the address, and two additional pumpers and an aerial ladder were sent to the scene, as well as trucks from Lappe and Oliver Paipoonge, for additional water support.

First responders were able to remove a pig and several kittens from the structure, but most of the animals inside did not survive.

Since there was no fire hydrant nearby, crews needed to use an in-ground holding tank to bring water to the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
