Grigio says conservation officers 'have the best job in the world'

THUNDER BAY — A Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officer based in Thunder Bay is Ontario's Conservation Officer of the Year for 2019.

The provincial conservation officers association announced his selection publicly Wednesday, but the award was first disclosed last weekend at the group's annual meeting in Owen Sound.

Grigio has worked as a conservation officer for more than 25 years, and is currently assigned to the MNRF's Thunder Bay Enforcement Unit.

"He is a top notch field officer, he has been a coach officer and a mentor to many new and aspiring conservation officers and has been an integral part in shaping and delivering the marine training program for the MNRF and the OPP," said Todd Steinberg, vice-president of the Ontario Conservation Officers Association.

Grigio has also been an instructor in defensive tactics, and has taught in the OPP marine training program for the past decade.

In addition, he has organized and led a number of projects targeting public safety-related issues and offences, and is a long-time volunteer in the community as a coach, trainer and board member in a youth hockey organization.

"We have the best job in the world. Full of spice, challenges, fun, adventure, and most importantly, rewarding in catching those who cheat our resources," Grigio said after learning about his award.

"All we have to do is care and everything falls into place. I can honestly say I have never met a CO who said 'I hate my job,' " he noted.

Natural Resources and Forestry Minister John Yakabuski issued a statement congratulating Grigio, saying his experience in the field has provided valuable insight to help the ministry develop policies and procedures to keep officers safe while maintaining effective operations.
