THUNDER BAY — The Marina Park overpass will be closed for the remainder of the summer, starting Tuesday, as construction is set to begin on the roundabout planned for the intersection of Cumberland and Water streets.
The work will begin on July 22 and the overpass is expected to remain closed until October.
Council approved the project in April of this year.
The city’s director of engineering Matthew Miedema told Newswatch earlier this year the cost to maintain a roundabout over 20-years would be $70,000 compared to the cost of traffic lights at around $300,000.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we move forward with this important project,” said Brian Newman, senior project engineer, in a news release.
“The new roundabout is designed to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection, and this closure is a necessary step to complete the work.”
Detours will be posted and access for emergency vehicles and limited truck traffic will be maintained while the work is underway.
Motor vehicle access to the park is available at Pearl Street and pedestrians can use the pedestrian overpass or the pedestrian crossing at Camelot Street.
