Marshall's sets opening date in Thunder Bay

Management team holding a three-day job fair from Thursday to Saturday, looking for 60 associates to staff the store.

THUNDER BAY – Marshall’s is opening at Intercity Shopping Centre on Oct. 15.

Before that can happen, management has to staff the store.

Officials from head office, along with the local management team, are spending three days taking applications and interviewing potential employees.

The job fair opened on Thursday morning and the response has been strong, said store manager Jen Nadon.

“We’re looking for about 60 associates to fill our store. It’s great for the community,” she said.

Marshall’s will fill a portion of the vacancy left at the mall when Sears shuttered its doors in January 2018.

A self-described off-price retailer, the company says it typically sells merchandise at 20 per cent to 60 per cent below full-price competitors, including department stores, specialty boutiques and major online retailers.

Marshall’s, which falls under the TJX Companies brand that also includes Winners and Home Sense, was founded in 1956 in Beverly, Mass. and has grown to include more than 1,100 stores in the United States.

It first expanded into Canada in 2011.

“It’s super important for us to come to Thunder Bay to fill that space in the mall and we’re really excited to be there,” Nadon said.

“And we’ve had a steady stream of people (applying), which is great to see. It was shared, our job fair, a whole bunch of times on Facebook, so we’re excited to see all their faces over the next three days.”

The job fair is taking place at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Carrick Street.
