THUNDER BAY — The Matawa Health Cooperative (MHC) will begin a two-day COVID-19 vaccination clinic in Thunder Bay Wednesday afternoon for high-risk Matawa First Nation members.

The clinic is open by appointment only at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition Heritage Building.

MHC says priority is being given to vulnerable individuals, particularly those 60 years old and over, including transients, the homeless, precariously housed and those having mental health and addictions issues.

Arrangements for these populations have been made over the past week to ensure their participation in the clinic.

Indigenous adults are  among the priority groups identified by Ontario's COVID-19 vaccine distribution task force.

MHC said it had the medical staff, training and infrastructure in place to enable it to move quickly to immunize the urban Matawa population in Thunder Bay.

It expects to administer 170 first doses of the Pfizer vaccine Wednesday and Thursday.

MHC is being assisted by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
