Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Bill Mauro has re-introduced legislation at Queen’s Park that would make it illegal to possess and transport certain invasive species.

The bill, if passed, would also allow earlier intervention by the province, faster response actions and promote compliance through inspection and enforcement.

In a release issued on Wednesday, Mauro said the proposed Invasive Species Act is a necessary piece of legislation that benefits Ontarians.

“Invasive species pose a significant risk to our natural environment and our economy,” Mauro said. “This legislation would make Ontario a natural leader in invasive species prevention and management. Working with our key partners, our proposed Invasive Species Act will serve as a critical tool in our collective fight against the growing threat of invasive species in Ontario.”

According to an MNR fact sheet, the Act would be the first-of-its-kind in Canada. The department estimates invasive species have a $1.4-trillion impact worldwide.
