Thunder Bay's new mayor and council will be officially sworn into office Monday night.

The event will include a smudging ceremony, greetings from former mayors and the Oath of Allegiance. While it is the first official night of the new council, Mayor Keith Hobbs has actually been on the job since last Wednesday.

The sign on the wall still had outgoing Mayor Lynn Peterson's name on it but inside the office, Keith Hobbs was already fielding dozens of calls. The newly-elected mayor says he's excited about finally taking over the role eight months after filing his election papers.

The suggestion of a midnight curfew for people under 16 years-old that Hobbs has already floated needs to be studied, he said. But he'd like to see it come forward soon.

When it comes to long-term goals, Hobbs said a new multiplex facility and increasing the city's population are on his radar.

The new council will be getting down to business soon after Monday night’s ceremony. A regular council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night, with a proposed $18 million project on the agenda.

The city is planning to four-lane Golf Links Road and Junot Avenue, to accommodate increased vehicular traffic there.
