Mayor's Mulligan helps out local children looking to get active (3 photos)

Proceeds from the tournament goes towards PRO Kids.

THUNDER BAY - The return of a city charity golf tournament will help families who struggle to afford the costs of putting their children in sports.

On a misty Friday at Strathcona Golf Course, City of Thunder Bay workers and various others took the links to take part in the 15th annual Mayor’s Mulligan

The tournament raises money for PRO Kids, a city-run service that helps low-income families access recreation activities for their kids.

Mayor Bill Mauro said he was glad the rain storm held off for Friday morning before teeing off on the opening hole par three.

“For me, sport and recreation has been a big part of my life. We know it’s getting expensive. Some of these activities can be quite prohibitive for a lot of families,” Mauro said.

The event expects to raise more than $13,000 for PRO Kids. Over the last 15 years, the tournament has helped raise more than $200,000 for local charities.

“It’s nice to be part of something where there’s absolutely no controversy here. It’s a worthwhile event,” Mauro said.

“We know there are families in need in our community, and this will provide an opportunity through the people that administer the program within the city to provide that support to a number of families.
