LIVERPOOL, N.S. – It’s on the playoff round at the pre-Olympic women’s curling trials for Thunder Bay’s Krista McCarville.
The veteran skip scored a 7-5 win on Friday afternoon over Moose Jaw, Sask.’s Penny Barker rink to finish round-robin play at the Liverpool, N.S. qualifier at 5-1, tied for top spot in the Pool A standings.
The McCarville rink, which also includes lead Sarah Potts, second Ashley Sippala and third Kendra Lilly of Sudbury, trailed 2-1 through three ends, but picked up a deuce in the fourth and was never behind again. McCarville scored one in the sixth and stole two in the seventh to go up 6-3, though only led by one heading into the 10th with the hammer after Barker stole a single in nine.
McCarville takes on Altona, Man.’s Mackenzie Zacharias in the opening round of the crossover playoffs. Zacharias finished 4-2 in second place in Pool B.
The winner advances to a one-game showdown with the winner of the other 1-2 match for one of two spots at the Olympic trials in Saskatoon. The loser of that game advances to the final for a shot at the other spot.
Should McCarville lose on Saturday, she’ll still be alive, needing to win three more games to grab the other spot, starting with a quarterfinal match against Corryn Brown, the lone team to best the Thunder Bay rink this week.
Six teams make the playoff round.
