McDonald's celebrates McHappy Day (2 photos)

For every McCafe cookie, beverage, Big Mac, or Happy Meal, a $1 donation will be made to the Ronald McDonald House.

THUNDER BAY - If you needed a new excuse to visit McDonald's, Wednesday is McHappy Day.

The nation-wide program is celebrating its 26th year.

For every McCafe cookie, beverage, Big Mac, or Happy Meal, a $1 donation will be made to the Ronald McDonald House.

“This is probably one of our busiest days of the year,” said guest experience leader Adam Carvalho at McDonald's on Red River Road. “I know a lot of people that have gone through the Ronald McDonald House, and there’s a lot of people in town that have a heavy support for this cause.”

Proceeds will help more than 25,000 families and children in Canada this year. The Ronald McDonald Houses provide families of sick children with a home to stay at while their child is being treated at a nearby hospital.

“A lot of people don’t think of it as an issue until they’re affected by it,” Carvalho said. “It’s nice to get that news out there.”

In 2018, $6.1 million was raised on McHappy Day across Canada.

“Deep down it’s just one of those things people love to care about.”

Carvalho is urging residents to stop by a McDonalds before midnight to help a good cause.

“Come support us. Even our cheapest option - a cookie for $1. Feel free to make a donation. Support the children.”
