THUNDER BAY – Dan Courtney’s career provided him an insight into the community that not many of his fellow at-large candidates can claim.

A retired Thunder Bay police officer, Courtney worked in forensics, as a school officer and in community policing. He’s seen the city’s dark underside, but he’s also managed to see the good that’s happening in neighbourhoods throughout Thunder Bay.

After retiring, he took his two decades of experience to Confederation College, while also moving into the entrepreneurial world to start a business consulting junior mining and biotech companies. He’s now president and CEO of a company working on diabetic skin-care solutions.

“I believe that Thunder Bay is experiencing immense change through a variety of factors including a diversified economy, infrastructure, demographics and a high violent crime rate. These issues are not one dimensional and each affects the other,” Courtney writes in his official candidate profile on the Thunder Bay Votes website.

“We live in an area of unparalleled beauty, full of amazing, talented people yet need leadership that can face tough challenges and make logical decisions with such issues as crime reduction, road maintenance, infrastructure spending and build on the many positive changes that we have seen over the last few years.”

Courtney, who has volunteered as the former chair of the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre and currently chairs the police foundation community membership group at the college, is also a big supporter of the arts community and sings in a local band.

“I will work tirelessly for this community that I love dearly," he says.

Note: TBNewswatch, after several attempts, heard from Dan Courtney, who told the Dougall Media newsroom that after nominations closed he was offered a new career opportunity which would not allow him the time to serve on council. However it was too late to pull his name from the ballot. Courtney is not actively campaigning. Information for this profile was taken from his profile on Thunder Bay Votes.
