Sargon Khubyar wants to see a more unified Thunder Bay.

“When I look at this city I look at it as a city that has to be a little more inclusive to all the types of people that are here. We have to come together as a community. I think we’ve lost part of our soul,” the at-large candidate said.

“When you look at this city it’s not welcoming. We have to clean it up a little.”

Khubyar, who represented the Northwood ward from 1995 to 1997, is seeking a return to city hall 17 years later. He said he based his decision to run at-large out of respect for what he calls “three competent candidates.”

He wants to take those lessons he learned from his previous stint and pick up where he left off with a lot of projects.

“We have to look at infrastructure. When I was in Northwood I had a lot of sewers put in and lots of watermains. I would like to continue that. There are a lot of other things to do here,” Khubyar said.

“There are a lot of things I did when I was on council before I never finished and this is a great opportunity for me to represent my community.”

The retired railway worker also has past experience serving on the Thunder Bay Police Services Board.

Khubyar can see the merits of the proposed event centre, though not it where it is presently planned to be located.

A project of that magnitude to the entire city should be more centrally located to be fair to every neighbourhood.

“My biggest thing is that if you build those facilities you have to pick the right location,” Khubyar said.

“You have to look at where people are living in this community. People living in Mount Forest have a $60 or $70 cab ride.”

However, he also acknowledged he would only be one vote on council and unable to make a difference on his own.
