Men rescued in canoeing accident

Thunder Bay OPP credit life jackets with saving lives of two men who capsized on Dog Lake

THUNDER BAY – Two men have been treated for hypothermia after spending more than an hour in Dog Lake on Friday. The men were rescued by a Thunder Bay OPP marine unit and treated for hypothermia in hospital after their canoe capsized.

The men were part of a larger group of canoeists, the rest of whom were able to pull to shore as waters turned rough. Police received an emergency call around 3 p.m. from one of the men, and were able to ping the caller’s phone to provide a GPS location to responders.

Police say the men had been in very rough waters for over an hour and were experiencing hypothermia when found by an OPP marine unit.

Four other members of the group were removed from the shores of the lake along with their canoes and brought to paramedics with the assistance of Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers.

Police said they credit the use of life jackets with saving the boaters’ lives.
